Don’t Postpone Joy!

Whatever season you’re navigating now, don’t postpone joy.

I lived in the United Kingdom for almost ten years and never visited the London Eye, Madame Tussauds, or any major tourist attraction. “Let’s go out,” my husband would say. But every time, I would respond with a no!

Between going to school full-time and working full-time, I couldn’t think of a reason to have fun. I was also calculating the cost in my head… lol.

When I was on a career break, I found myself postponing my joy until I returned to work or achieved certain milestones. My thoughts were, “I’ll enjoy myself more once I find a new job,” or “When I get back to work, then I’ll have time for hobbies and leisure.”

Don’t postpone joy! Life is happening in the here and now, and it’s crucial to make the most of the present, regardless of the circumstances.

Enjoy where you are on the way to where you’re going. Embrace the present and be present.

Here are some examples of ways to enjoy the season, no matter what you’re going through:

  • Get a New Hairstyle: Treat yourself to a fresh haircut or a new hairstyle. I recently got a new wig, pictured above from Amazon, and I’m loving my new look. A change in your appearance can boost your mood and give you a sense of renewal.

  • Engage in a Hobby: Someone asked me the other day, “What do you do to have fun?” Fun, I thought. That question got me thinking, and I started consciously incorporating fun into my life. Try your hand at painting, gardening, or crafting. It’s a great way to express yourself and learn something new.

  • Explore Local Attractions: Don’t wait until you move out of your state! Visit parks, museums, or galleries in your area. Sometimes, local spots can be just as enjoyable as famous landmarks.

  • Plan a Day Out: Gather your girlfriends and organize a day trip to a nearby town or city you haven’t explored yet. Check out local restaurants, shops, or natural sites.

  • Connect with Friends: Spend quality time with friends, whether it’s a coffee date, a picnic in the park, or a game night at home.

  • Practice Mindfulness: Take a moment each day to sit quietly, breathe deeply, and appreciate the present. This can help you feel more grounded and content.

  • Volunteer: Helping others can bring immense joy. Find a local charity or organization where you can contribute your time and skills.

  • Read a Book: Dive into a good book that interests you. This can be a wonderful escape and a chance to relax. I’ll list my book club books in my next post.

  • Watch a Movie or Series: Treat yourself to a movie night at home or go to the cinema. Pick something light-hearted or inspiring.

  • Cook or Bake Something New: Experiment in the kitchen with a new recipe. Cooking can be therapeutic and enjoyable.

  • Take Nature Walks: Spend time outdoors, whether it’s a hike, a stroll in the park, or just sitting in your garden. Nature can provide a calming atmosphere.

  • Create a Gratitude Journal: Write down things you’re grateful for each day. Focusing on the positive can shift your mindset. I talked about this in my recent Youtube video – You are not behind.

  • Listen to Music or Podcasts: Discover new music or interesting podcasts that inspire or entertain you during your downtime.

  • Attend Community Events: Look for local festivals, farmers’ markets, or workshops. Engaging with your community can provide a sense of connection and enjoyment.

  • Practice Self-Care: Set aside time for relaxation and self-care, whether it’s a long bath, a yoga session, or a spa day at home.

Choose activities that resonate with you and make a conscious effort to incorporate them into your routine!

Give yourself permission to enjoy this season and the amazing life you have. I’m here, cheering you on.
