It’s another school year! Summer seemed to fly by, didn’t it? Between the pool trips, playdates, and the seemingly endless rounds of snacks and meals, it was a whirlwind. My kitchen felt like a revolving door, and if I had a penny for every time my 9-year-old said, “I’m bored,” I could probably fund the school supplies for the entire year! But through it all, I’m filled with gratitude.
I’m grateful to see them grow—not just in height, but in curiosity and spirit. Grateful to be present in their lives, soaking up the laughter, the learning, and even the sibling squabbles. Grateful for the support of family and friends who make these moments even more special.
As we turn the page to this new school year, it’s time to get things in order. By now, you’ve probably checked off most of the items on your back-to-school list—backpacks, lunchboxes, and the usual school supplies. But don’t forget the little extras that make the transition smoother.
My 9-year-old decided not to have school lunch at the later part of last school year and it has saved me lots. I found this Thermos Stainless Steel Flask that keeps her food hot all day long. That way she can take her favorite meals like Jollof Rice, Spaghetti, and meatballs to school.
My 15-year-old, prefers to sleep with the light on and she is not much of an early riser so I ordered this Digital Alarm Clock I found at my friends house that is not only LED but show’s the time so boldly that she can’t miss it…lol
If you’re last minute like me, you can still grab some School Supplies off Amazon for the new school year. If your kiddo is of college age, Amazon Prime has a 6 months free trial for $0. Then half the price after. You should check it out.
Supporting Our Kids Throughout the School Year
As parents, our role doesn’t end once we’ve dropped them off at the school bus. Here are some meaningful ways we can support our kids as they navigate this new school year:
- Create a Positive Morning Routine: Start the day with encouragement and positivity. We use the Over The Edge Youth Devotional to start off our day. And confess the word together as a family. A consistent morning routine helps them feel secure and ready to face the day’s challenges.
- Be Involved: Attend school events, parent-teacher meetings, and volunteer when possible. Your presence shows your child that you value their education and are there to support them.
- Establish a Homework Routine: Create a consistent schedule for homework, whether it’s right after school or after a snack break. Take away phones and tablets to minimize distractions, helping them complete their homework efficiently.
- Encourage Open Communication: Create an environment where your kids feel comfortable sharing their day with you—both the highs and the lows. Listen actively and offer guidance when needed.
- Support Their Social Life: Friendships are crucial during the school years. Encourage playdates and involvement in extracurricular activities where they can build connections and social skills.
- Prioritize Mental Health: Keep an eye on their emotional well-being. School can be stressful, so make sure they have time to relax, unwind, and talk about anything that’s bothering them.
- Celebrate Their Achievements: Big or small, every achievement is worth celebrating. Acknowledge their efforts and encourage them to keep striving for their best.
Remember, we’re doing our best as parents, trusting our children’s school year into the hands of a perfect God. Let’s approach this new season with a heart full of gratitude and a readiness to support our kids through every step of their journey.
Here’s to a fantastic school year ahead!
